Nyepi 2024
I hope you have a great day. I just want to inform you that we will celebrate Nyepi on March 11th. The rundown will be as follow :
On March 26th ~ 27th - Melasti/Melisi/Mekiis
The people of Canggu and the surrounding area will go to the beach (especially Batu Bolong and Echo Beach) to do Melasti Ceremony. During these dates, you are prohibited to swim or surf on those beaches, especially around the ceremony area. You may come and watch but you are expected to wear polite dresses, this means no bikinis or any other revealing attire. Not only on the beach but also on the streets around Canggu.
The Pecalang (banjar security team) will partially close the road at a certain time of the day. When you found one, just obey what they say. If they tell you to wait then just wait, or if they tell you to turn around then just find another way. Don’t get yourself into trouble.
On March 28th - Pengerupukan/Tawur
This is one day before Nyepi. We will have some ceremonies in several locations during the day and there will be Ogoh-Ogoh Parade during the night. The parade will start around 5 PM and usually end around 10 PM. In Banjar Canggu, it usually starts from the Jl. Batu Bolong - Jl. Nelayan junction. You are free to join the parade.
One thing to take note tho is that the stores will close in the afternoon to evening. You will need to stock up on foods for the next day, preferably ones that are ready to eat and easy to prepare because, on the next day, we have supposed to not light any fire including the stove.
On March 29th - Nyepi/Balinese New Year
Nyepi starts at 5 AM and ends at 6 AM on the next day. This day is meant for the people of Bali, especially ones that are Hindu to have a break and reflect. Stay silent and do nothing. The purpose is to have time for self-reflection. During this day, there will be absolutely zero economic activity. This means you can’t go outside to buy things or order things to be delivered to you because there will be no activity at all. Be prepared.
As a foreigner or tourist, there are 3 rules that you need to obey :
You are not allowed to turn on the light and/or light a fire.
You are not allowed to make any loud noises.
You are not allowed to go outside your house/hotel/villa
These 3 rules are the minimum that you need to avoid any trouble. Other than that you can do all your daily activities in the house quietly. There will be electricity and probably the internet too but only via Wifi in the house.
The rules are a bit different if you are a Balinese. As Balinese we are expected to :
Not light any fire including no cooking, no tv, or any source of light, fire, and heat.
Not working, means we are expected to do nothing at all for a day.
Not going anywhere, means staying at home.
No entertainment, you can’t have any sort of fun during this day.
If you want, you can try to not do these 4 things too. I advise you to do, it at least once in your lifetime.
